If you are new to kitesurfing and looking for a good place to start and learn the basics of kitesurfing then I recommend getting a trainer kitesurfing kite so that you can practice on land.  Trainer kites are 2 line foil kites that range in size from 1 to 3 meters.  Start by using a larger 3 meter kitesurfing kite as it will be easier to get the basics down before you move to more difficult kites.

Another benefit of using a trainer kite is that you get to practice your kite handling skills on land before taking to the water.  Once you are in the water there are many other things that you need to be doing in addition to controlling your kite.  Without have to focus on standing and steering your kiteboard you will easily be able to focus on maneuvering the kitesurfing kite and getting the basics down.

It is important to go slowly when first learning how to kitesurf.  The last thing you would want to do is put on all the necessary kitesurfing gear and jump into the water without knowing how to work any of the equipment.  This could be potentially very dangerous for yourself and the others around you.  This is why it is recommended that you learn some of the basic techniques of kitesurfing on land with a trainer kite before taking the open waters.  This will also save you a lot of frustration when you are in the water and unable to maneuver because you can not steer the kite the way you want.
